Perinatal
Pregnancy, birth and the first year of parenthood (the perinatal period) can be a joyous and exciting time, bringing new challenges and responsibilities for expecting parents.
It is also a time where both parents may experience depression or anxiety during pregnancy (antenatal) and following the birth of their baby (postnatal).
Some parents report a traumatic birth which may or may not lead to post-traumatic stress disorder.
Research indicates 1 in 5 expecting or new mums and 1 in 10 expecting or new dads may experience perinatal anxiety or depression, affecting around 100,000 families across Australia every year. This can occur any time during the perinatal period up until your child turns one. After this time, it is usually treated as a non-perinatal mental illness.
Common warning signs:
1. Feeling low or not feeling anything
2. Feeling hopeless or worthless
3. Losing interest in others, including your new baby
4. Sleeping too much, or difficulty sleeping
5. Changes in appetite, together with weight loss or gain
6. Difficulty coping with daily activities
7. Thoughts of harming yourself or your child
If you’re experiencing the above warning signs, please contact your Gp to discuss your ongoing care and support. Your Gp may offer a Mental Health Care Plan for your ongoing psychological support.
